Pangong Tso

Gallery · 16 photographs

Pangong Tso stretches across the high-altitude desert of Ladakh at more than 4,200 metres, its waters shifting from turquoise to cobalt with the changing light. Surrounded by stark mountains and almost treeless terrain, the lake extends for roughly 135 kilometres, with much of it lying across the border in Tibet. Its extraordinary colour, silence, and immense scale make it one of the defining landscapes of the Himalayas.

You are viewing the standard-range version. These photographs were edited in HDR — on a display that supports it, the highlights carry considerably more light. Most screens made in the last few years can show it: a recent Mac or Windows laptop, an iPhone 12 or later, an iPad Pro, or any HDR monitor. On Windows, HDR has to be switched on in Settings › System › Display. Use Safari, Chrome or Edge — Firefox still shows the standard-range version everywhere.HDR
